"Southern California" Ace of Base
Nov 30, 2010
"Southern California" is a 2010 song by the Swedish pop group Ace of Base.
After 17 years of #1 singles, international fame, and countless music industry awards, Ace of Base finally decided to record a song about California.
It's about time.
"Southern California" tells the story of a person, on a "road to nowhere", who hitch-hikes to Southern California. After a lifetime of "searching", the California visitor meets some kind of a guru or cult leader wearing a purple robe.
Inside a strange temple where folks chant in the shadows, the California visitor is greeted by a figure, dressed in silver, who appears out of the smoke --- and speaks about "searching".
Throughout the experience, the Southern California visitor keeps seeing the "light of San Diego"...
Maybe Ace of Base are going for the Eagles' "Hotel California" vibe. In that song, a male visitor is greeted by a spooky chick. In "Southern California", a female visitor is greeted by a spooky dude.
In both songs, the visitor is introduced to a freaky world that gives one the heebie-jeebies. There is no "pink champagne on ice" mentioned in "Southern California", though --- only "smoke".
One of the darker California songs, "Southern California" by Ace of Base is a very different kind of California.
