Sempra Philanthropy Restores Forest

February 24, 2010

San Diego-based Sempra Energy Corp. has just announced a $50,000 gift to support TreePeople's Forest Aid partnership to restore the fire-damaged San Bernardino National Forest.

Sempra's donation will help restore land damaged by the massive wildfires in 2003 and 2007 that tore through the San Bernardino Mountains, affecting 185,000 acres of valuable Southern California forest.

Sempra's corporate generosity supports TreePeople's Forest Aid partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and San Bernardino National Forest Association to restore the San Bernardino Mountains.

Last year, 20,050 tree seedlings were planted in the San Bernardino Forest by 2,547 Forest Aid volunteers in one of the largest ever volunteer-led restoration efforts in Southern California.

The Sempra Energy Foundation's grant program was created in 2009 to provide resources to support exemplary programs in environmental restoration and conservation. Last year's grant cycle received hundreds of applications from Southern California based, non-profit, environmental organizations.

TreePeople was selected because of its proven track record in results-oriented conservation programs. The $50,000 award from the Sempra Energy Foundation is one of the largest environmental grants to support fire restoration efforts in the Inland Empire.

"We look forward to supporting TreePeople and their collaborators by helping them expand their mission to restore much needed forest land that truly adds to our local quality of life and environment," said Frank Urtasun, executive director of the Sempra Energy Foundation.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, 1.5 million new trees need to be planted on 60,000 acres of the San Bernardino Mountains, especially in high-need areas. This reforestation is important to water quality in the region and to mitigate erosion and landslides that could impair mountain access.

"We are delighted to have Sempra's support. This generous gift will enable thousands more people from all over Southern California to participate in restoring our local forests, which are our region's critical air and watersheds," said TreePeople founder and president Andy Lipkis.

Forest Aid's mission is to replant and revitalize the mountains of Southern California. The partnership is based on a simple belief: That a single person planting a single tree can help revitalize fire-damaged areas, affect climate change, clean the air, capture rainwater and build a sense of community.

Forest Aid is funded by generous grants from The Walt Disney Company and The Boeing Company.

TreePeople is an environmental nonprofit that unites the power of trees, people and technology to grow a sustainable future for Los Angeles.

Canada California Innovation Partnership

February 14, 2010

The Canada - California Strategic Innovation Partnership (CCSIP) is an important element of the Canadian and Californian science and technology agendas.

Peter Van Loan, the Canadian Minister of International Trade, recently announced 15 research initiatives of cooperation with the Government of California, which "will help move ideas from the laboratory to the real world, and will contribute to a cleaner environment and improved healthcare."

Minister Van Loan continued, "Our joint projects will lead to advances in many fields, from carbon storage and new biofuels to energy-efficient computers and better border crossings."

Nine of the 15 initiatives are collaborative events and six are research and development projects. They involve 21 Canadian universities in partnership with eight University of California campuses.

"This collaborative partnership is great news for both California and Canada. These projects will help speed up progress in many key areas important to both California and Canada, including climate change, renewable energy, infectious disease control and stem cell research," said California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"CCSIP will bring together some of the best researchers and innovators to find solutions that will protect our environment while growing our economy."

The Canada-California Strategic Innovation Partnership, which was inaugurated four years ago, is a catalyst for collaborative research, development and delivery between Canada and California --- two very innovative jurisdictions.

The CCSIP's first call for proposals was administered by the University of California’s Office of the President and by International Science and Technology Partnerships Canada (ISTP Canada).

"The funding of these novel and mutually beneficial collaborative projects reflects the important role played by both governments in promoting world-class research and innovation," said Henri Rothschild, President and Chief Executive Officer of ISTP Canada.

"These bilateral initiatives promise to provide a strategic agenda for enhanced cooperation between Canada and California in priority areas, accelerate the delivery of research results and help to stimulate our economies."

"The CCSIP offers a valuable framework for international research cooperation, beginning with a strong innovation partner—Canada," said Mark Yudof, President of the University of California.

"In these challenging times, cooperation is essential to broaden the impact of our research, and accelerate innovation that stimulates economic growth in California and Canada."

The approved innovation projects will involve 425 personnel at the universities.  Funding is split between participating universities in both Canada and California.

California and Canada share a productive and well-established relationship:
  • Trade between Canada and California averages $35 billion per year.
  • Canada is California's second largest trade partner.
  • 840,000 California jobs are supported by trade with Canada.
  • Canadians average 1.3 million annual visits to California, spending $1 billion.
  • Californians average 800,000 annual visits to Canada, spending $600 million.
It's fantastic to know that the Bear is totally cool with the Maple Leaf.

Schwarzenegger Runs Olympic Torch

February 12, 2010

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger represented California as a torchbearer today in the run-up to the 2010 Winter Games Opening Ceremony in Vancouver.

John Furlong, the Chief Executive Officer of Olympic Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Games, said that Schwarzenegger played a crucial role in today's torch run.

"He has taken an extraordinary position on the environment and has developed a great relationship with the province of British Columbia," said Furlong.

"He is a powerful spokesman and is very popular here. He has been here many times and he helps focus attention on what we are doing."

Schwarzenegger, a legendary athlete, ran with the flame at daybreak through mobs of crazed fans.

Police had trouble keeping the swelling crowd away from the California governor as he ran toward a scenic lighthouse to hand the flame off to Seb Coe, chairman of the London 2012 Summer Games and a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Afterwards, Schwarzenegger chatted with British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell about Canadian-Californian relations and the 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver.

Californians Redraw District Lines

February 8, 2010

For the first time ever, the responsibility to redraw district lines is the hands of the People of California.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission needs immediate help in their effort to redraw district lines from California citizens.

In 2008, California voters passed Proposition 11, creating California's first-ever citizens' redistricting commission.

The 14-member commission will redraw the state Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization districts.  The legislative lines drawn by the commission will determine political representation in California for the NEXT DECADE.

District lines have historically been drawn by members of the Legislature and are important in determining the state's political districts.

6.0 California Coast Earthquake

February 4, 2010

A strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake has just struck offshore Northern California this hour. The quake struck at a depth of seven miles (11.2 km) at a distance of 35 miles (56 km) west-northwest of Petrolia, California, the USGS said.

There are no reports of damaged structures or injuries yet, according to a police spokesman in Eureka, the biggest town near Petrolia in the Humboldt County region.

A magnitude 6.5 quake struck off the coast of Eureka last month, in the same region where three major earthquake faults join together. The population is rather sparse in this section of Northern California's coast, so a lot of injuries or deaths are not expected.

The fact that this is the second major earthquake in this area --- in only 26 days --- should have all California residents preparing for a potential emergency. California is Earthquake Country, after all.

All Californians should be prepared, at both home and work, with extra food, water and emergency supplies. California should be disaster-ready at all times, but the current swarm of quakes up and down the state should be enough of a reminder for the unprepared to PREPARE.

California Small Businesses Hot!

Sales of California small businesses increased by 24 percent last month over the same period in 2009, with 1,074 medium-sized and small businesses changing hands last month. In contrast, there were only 865 transactions in January 2009.

Up 24 percent?  Right on!  These encouraging figures are from BizBen.com, a company which advertises 5,000 California businesses for sale.

California small business buyers and sellers had been waiting out the uncertainty in the economy, but now they are lining up to do business.
It's the first time in three years that the January figure has been so positively high!

The growth in January small business sales was strongest in Southern California, with L.A. County up 28 percent from January 2009 to last month, San Diego County up 33 percent, and Orange County up 20 percent.

California entrepreneurs have been very resourceful in solving business problems, with many sellers helping to fund their deals, or transferring only part of the company, or having the buyer take possession of the inventory on consignment.

Californians always find a creative way to get it done!

The $30 billion in promised federal TARP money would provide funds for small businesses through their local lenders. This would help to get California businesses on Main Street some money previously available only to Wall Street.  Bring it on!

Let's keep this fantastic trend going.  California small businesses totally rock!

Woman Heads CA National Guard

February 2, 2010

California National Guard Brigadier General Mary J. Kight is now the first woman, and the first African-American, to head the largest National Guard unit in America.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Kight, 59, who has been with the Guard for a quarter-century. 16,600 Army National Guard and 4,800 Air National Guard members will now be under the command of Adjutant General Kight.

The California State University-Chico graduate has been assistant adjutant general since 2006, and she spent seven years in the Air Force previously.

Kight, a Republican, replaces General William Wade II, who will become a deputy chief of staff with a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) force in Naples, Italy.

"Brigadier General Mary Kight is a proven courageous, loyal and honorable leader. She has a long and distinguished history of service to our state and nation and I am proud to have her as the first female adjutant general of our military forces here in California," said Governor Schwarzenegger.

"I am confident that with General Kight’s leadership, the California National Guard will continue to be fully prepared, standing ready and able to assist our local communities and our country when called upon in times of emergency."

A Sacramento resident and Monterey native, Kight will now receive $180,201 a year for her new post. She is very honored and excited.

"I whole-heartedly share in the Governor’s commitment to public safety and ensuring that our armed forces are well-trained and equipped to provide support and assistance here in California and abroad at a moment’s notice," said General Kight.

"I am honored to take on this new position serving the California National Guard as adjutant general and I look forward to using my knowledge and experience to uphold California’s military forces’ outstanding legacy of service."

Kight is the first African-American woman at the helm of any national guard in the United States of America.  February is Black History Month, and Mary J. Knight is certainly making history all the way around.

Congratulations, General Kight!

#1 California Poem on the Internet Exclusively on Californiality.com

"I AM CALIFORNIA"

I am the creative genesis persisting amid chaos; the idea made manifest.

I am the eternal state of "becoming".

Ever changing, morphing and mutating, my essence reflects the mind of my Creator.

Purity, perfection and productivity are my principles.

I am innovation; the perennially new. I am relentless forward momentum.

I am the unity of the spiritual, the mental and the physical. I am symmetry and balance.

I am the created who recreates; the blessed who blesses; the beloved who loves without prejudice.

I am expression; the vision seen; the voice heard; the thought interpreted.

Races, religions and cultures are my colors, hues and shades. Variety is my lifeblood.

I am the portrait of humanity which beckons an impassioned brush stroke from every hand.

I am relationship; always conversing, sharing, belonging, reciprocating, accepting and providing.

I am contrary; an oasis in the desert; order from chaos; beauty from ashes; hope from despair; unity from diversity; light from darkness.

I am information, communication, technology and intelligence always seeking Wisdom.

Ever the student of the Eternal, I instruct willing minds through my failures and successes.

I am the experience; the be-in; the adventure; the journey; the trip. I am interactivity and participation.

I am the ultimate; the zenith; the apex; the extreme; the max. Limitless minds are my companions into the timeless unknown.

I am to be merged with; not to simply be admired from afar. My visions are to be shared; my dreams are to be realized; my desires are to be consummated.

I am the fruit of ambition, effort and achievement. I am the rarest wine to be tasted, savored and thoroughly enjoyed, not merely collected.

Golden, priceless and breathtaking, I am the star-studded dream, the quaking vision, and the imagination on fire.

I am California.
