Joshua Tree Scenic Drive

March 30, 2010

Joshua Tree National Park is one of Southern California's most unusual attractions.  Scenic driving on Joshua Tree's open roads is a liberating and exhilarating experience.

The iconic Joshua Trees dominate the landscape of California's desert region, and their appeal is almost extraterrestrial in nature.  Old Native American Indians have told me of the "long journey" of the fabled Joshua Tree.

Apparently, the Southern California desert used to be the ocean floor way back when.  For many ages, undersea lilies grew wildly in an underwater paradise of darkness devoid of light.

Over many eras of intense seismic thrust, the ocean floor was pushed into higher and higher elevations.  Being removed further away from water, the undersea lily was forced to adapt to blinding sunlight and searing heat.

These days, the Joshua Tree looks nothing like a lily.  Grotesque and spooky, these modern trees look like something from another planet!  In their own way, though, they are strangely beautiful.

High-speed driving through millions of Joshua Trees is an otherworldly experience that's not easily forgotten.  It's great for clearing the mind and activating the imagination.  Inspiration abounds everywhere.

Joshua Tree National Park is a completely different side of California that totally rocks!

Ronald Reagan Centennial

March 29, 2010

Governor Ronald Reagan was a beacon of optimism for California during an era when social mores were being challenged.  Reagan's assertive enthusiasm ushered in a new era in which Californians showed the world that anything is possible.

The Ronald Reagan Centennial is a celebration of the life of a world famous California governor and American president who defied the odds, rocked the boat, and led Californians through a long and successful political adventure.

This year would have been Governor Reagan's 100th, and his Centennial year is one of many moments of remembrance and appreciation through next February, Reagan's birthday.

Current advertising by G.E. highlights the corporation's successful relationship with Ronald Reagan, G.E.'s former spokesman.  The company showcases a special website celebrating the Ronald Reagan Centennial.

The Reagan Library in Simi Valley has a great number of special events and commemorations happening throughout the Centennial to enjoy a fantastic year of celebration for The Gipper.

Do you belong on Rodeo Drive?

The best way to find out is to cruise Rodeo.  Jump in the car and take a ride!

Soak up some sun and glamor and, if you've got major bucks, support Rodeo Drive's local businesses with a little "conspicuous consumption" by all means.

Advice for Steve Poizner

March 26, 2010

Steve Poizner is the candidate for California governor who has been lagging behind his Republican opponent in the polls.  This could change, however, with a little tweaking of campaign strategy.

Poizner could actually win the Republican nomination for California governor and take the gubernatorial election victory away from the Democrats in November.

How is this possible?  Here are some suggestions for leveling the Republican playing field before the primary election on June 8th:

Promote the Positive

Steve Poizner's opponent started a great conversation, early last year, with a fantastic internet video called "A New California".  While I don't endorse individual candidates, I really liked that video.  It highlighted what's great about California and its innovative citizens with a stimulating, upbeat soundtrack.

The positive tone of the video compelled me to share it with family, friends and colleagues.  It was the first time many of them had heard of the candidate at all.  Most Californians love to feel inspired.  The positive impact of that video was powerful.

It is still true that one catches more flies with honey than with vinegar.  Shining a light is more commanding than cursing the darkness.  Even the insects gravitate toward the light.

These days, Steve Poizner's gubernatorial rival is spending tons of cash on cheesy anti-Poizner attack ads with a fake Monty Python circus or carnival theme.  Most California voters really don't care about 500 reasons NOT to vote for a candidate.

Obviously, there's a current vacuum which candidate Poizner must fill.  Californians are eager for good news and uplifting messages that encourage, inspire and empower.  Negative California messages are counterproductive, defeatist and depressing.  Avoid them.

Positive California Is Now Hot

Poizner must become a California evangelist.  He's an experienced, innovative entrepreneur.  Creative minds need an inspiring environment, and Steve Poizner knows this in a deeply personal way.  His demeanor is candid, friendly and natural when he is relaxed.

Former California Republican Party executive director Jon Fleischman, now a conservative blogger, said the following about Steve Poizner:

"I’ve never met anybody who worked harder or was more diligent about doing everything he could to win a public office. He’s blessed with a very disarming demeanor, and he is refreshingly candid with people. I think the strength of his personality oftentimes helped ideologues put aside their personal differences with him."

I would say that Fleischman's comment describes Steve Poizner's basic temperament accurately.  Poizner is a person who can easily --- and quite convincingly --- carry a message of inspiring encouragement to frustrated California voters.

Poizner's charges leveled against his Republican challenger in February may be legitimate, but his negative and defensive tone felt unnatural coming from such a deep-thinking, conscientious individual.  It was "forced".

Be Natural, Open and Human

Oprah Winfrey is so successful with her audience because she impresses viewers as an open, friendly and intimately warm person.  Steve Poizner has the same appeal when he simply shows who he really is.  His Republican opponent feels distant and guarded to most Californians.

Many voters in California are spouses and parents.  Family values are still important to the fabric of California society and culture.  For Steve Poizner to share his related experience and candid observations on marriage and family would be very humanizing and attractive.

A successful entrepreneur, Poizner is a natural spokesman for Californians who want to start a business or invent something for market.  He's been there and done that, and very successfully.  Millions of people would appreciate and respect Poizner for sharing tips and advice with Californians on how they, too, can make it happen.

Poizner The Teacher, Poizner The Billionaire, and Poizner The Insurance Commissioner are all worthy of admiration, but "Steve The Guy" just may give this gubernatorial candidate the California gold he's looking for.

State Of The California Dream

March 25, 2010

The California Dream is alive and well for those who pay attention.  There are so many Californians successfully living their own California Dream, right this minute, that it staggers the imagination.

Over the past three years, the loudest voices have been proclaiming the California Dream to be dead.  For some folks, it is.  Why?  Because they believe it to be true.  How unfortunate.

The fact is that there is more money in California today than at any point in history.  The wealth in the Golden State is shocking and awe-inspiring --- if one turns off the negative propaganda and actively tunes in.

The California Dream is Alive and Kicking

Beverly Hills, Atherton, Montecito, Palm Springs, Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Malibu, Pebble Beach, Hidden Hills, Santa Barbara, and more of California's most expensive zip codes are living large today.

The very exclusive California Club in Los Angeles is still hosting posh events, and the best California luxury hotels are busy booking those really expensive suites.  Real estate is selling, salons are styling, and celebrities still want a Bentley.

There are plenty of ambitious people who keep finding a California dream job.  Plenty of entrepreneurs are excited about starting a new business too.  This state provides more opportunities than ever for daring California dreamers who "endeavor to persevere".

California's Best Businesses Not Fleeing

The combined wealth of California's largest companies is impossible to total up on any given day, but it is an astronomical amount of money.  Obviously, somebody is buying what someone else is selling from California.

California's business climate is unbearable?  How come so many successful California-based corporations happily remain in the Golden State?

Just one California company, Chevron, has revenues of a quarter-trillion dollars --- and some still say that California's economy is no longer golden.

California: The Billionaire Capitol

If you lined up all of the billionaires on our planet today, you would discover that a full 10-percent of them all live in one place --- California.  We're talking mega-billionaires.

If California were to ever really "fall into the Pacific Ocean", both Forbes and Fortune would be out of business for sure.  The Land of Gold is overflowing with big businesses and billionaires.

Satellite technology beams trillions of dollars worth of financial transactions through every Californian constantly.  At every turn, one is literally bathed in wealth just by existing here.

Current State of The California Dream: Fantastic

The California Dream is closer to reality than ever before.  Inspiration, Creation and Innovation still make up the "trinity of success" around here, regardless of the type of industry.  California's business environment is as great as the famous weather.

Wanna Be a California Governor?

March 24, 2010

California governors are famous.  California governors get worldwide media coverage.  California governors have a platform for national politics.

Who really wants to be the governor of California, though?

Would you?

Sure, there's the adrenalin-pumping excitement of announcing that you want to be "the next governor of the great state of California", but a gubernatorial campaign is both exciting and draining.  Election Day cannot come soon enough for many candidates.

Be prepared for critics to blather about your accent, your personal life, your past, and your hair.  You will either need nerves of steel, really good drugs, or both.  The circus will become your life.

For each of the 38 California governors who were elected, there were many others who sacrificed time, money and dignity for an election defeat.

Let's say you win, though.  You're now the 39th California governor.  Yay!  You're the winner!  Now hit the ground running.  Hard.

40 million Californians don't have the time or patience to watch you smiling and giving air-kisses with the glitterati for very long.  Yes, we're still glamorous California, but Joe needs a job, Mary needs prenatal care, crazed killers must be locked up, and whales are crying.

It's a reality show, dear, and you are the star.  Makeup.  Wardrobe.  Sound check.  15 minutes.  Eat later.  Chop chop!

The California governor heads the executive branch, commands the state's military forces, enforces state laws, approves bills passed by the California Legislature (or not), convenes the legislature, and grants pardons.  Simple enough, right?

A little flexibility might come in handy.  Natural disasters, social disorder and serial cult killings can ruin a good buzz.  Thousands of competing agendas screaming for your attention might mess with your Zen.  Raging wildfires may have you carrying cartons of diapers to survivors, on camera, with your un-dyed roots showing.

When things get really heavy, just put on a Beach Boys album and smile.

To go through everything it takes, you need a passionate, gigantic reason for doing it.  There has got to be some pressing, overwhelming purpose that is big.  California is larger than life, so you must be.

Legacy.  Fame.  Adoration.  Heroism.  Masochism.  Cash.  Immortality.  Codependency.  New world order.   Extraterrestrials.  Alignment of all planets.  Universal brotherhood and togetherness.  A smile from God through the parting heavens.  Something!

Pick a real purpose and stick with it.  Give it your all.  Spend yourself.  Work it.

You must have grit and guts through glamor and grins.  Develop a taste for holy profanity and profane holiness.  Take acting lessons if necessary.  Former California governors could show you a thing or two, no doubt.

Still wanna be a California governor?

Cass Elliot: California Senator

March 19, 2010

Cass Elliot, the legendary singer from The Mamas and The Papas, might have served as a U.S. senator from California if she had lived.

Labeled "The Queen of L.A. Pop Society" in the 1960s by Rolling Stone, and "The Earth Mother of Hippiedom" by Papa John Phillips, Cass Elliot was also a political activist who had dreamed of winning a U.S. Senate seat from California.

In the early 1970s, during a nationally televised interview, she expressed a desire to one day run for the U.S. Senate.  Soon after, she became politically active and famously involved in the 1972 presidential campaign.

Elliot spent the whole year touring college campuses, speaking on the importance of voter registration.  Her passion was confronting social apathy.

A great speaker, Cass Elliot had a great interest in the issues of the day.  "I know the way I would like to see things for this country and in my travels, when I talk to people, everybody wants pretty much the same thing:  peace, enough jobs, no poverty and good education."

Cass was very outspoken about social and political concerns.  She was not "politically-correct", especially for the early 1970s, but people liked her and listened.  She would, no doubt, be a force to be reckoned with in today's California.

Feeling that California needed changes, Cass stated that "it’s a police state.  I know, because I bought an Aston-Martin and I put a Reagan sticker on it, only because I know if I’m speeding through Orange County late at night with a Reagan sticker on that kind of expensive car, I’ll never be stopped.  If I were in a Renault, I might go to jail."

Cass Elliot was famous for her sense of humor, optimism, charisma, magnetism, individuality, originality, freedom, determination, charm, honesty and straightforwardness.  Her powers of persuasion were as legendary as her phenomenal vocal talent.

About celebrities in politics, she said, "So many people in show business go into politics, and I used to say 'What the heck do they know about it?'  But when you travel around, you really do get to feel --- not to be cliche --- the pulse of the country and what people want.  I'm concerned and it's not good to be unconcerned and just sit there."

What kind of leader might a Senator Cass Elliot have been today?  We will never know, but she is remembered my many as a powerful "mover and shaker" during her short life.

From her home base in the Laurel Canyon section of Los Angeles, Cass was a connection maker in the '60s and '70s.  Several of the music industry's greatest groups would not have existed if Cass had not introduced singers, songwriters and musicians to one another.

Ms. Elliot was respected as a skilled behind-the-scenes strategist who made big things happen.

Surrounded by the biggest players of the time in entertainment, politics, media and business, Cass Elliot made it her business to know everyone --- and knowing Cass had its benefits.  Her Rolodex was as golden as California.

Born near the nation's Capitol, the accomplished singer, actress and producer had politics in her blood.

In a Rolling Stone interview, Cass stated, "I think everybody who has a brain should get involved in politics.  Working within. Not criticizing it from the outside.  Become an active participant, no matter how feeble you think the effort is."

Her words still resonate today:  "I don't think it's so important who you vote for --- you vote for who you believe in.  The important thing is to vote, because it's our way and it's the best way."

To millions around the world, Cass Elliot represented what California was all about --- a place where anybody could live their dream with boldness and passion.

Homesick for California?

March 16, 2010

Are you missing California?  Are you totally homesick for the Golden State?

During the past couple of years, many Californians became ex-Californians.  Are you one?  Did you give up and make your "escape" from California?  Are the reasons you left not as important now as they were back then?

Are you thinking twice about that decision?  Are you, perhaps, regretting your relocation as a bad move?  Was leaving California a knee-jerk reaction that you're kicking yourself for now?

Many of you left California for other reasons, I know.  You might have been transferred somewhere else due to a job.  Some of you had to attend to pressing family matters.  You might be one of the thousands of Californians stationed abroad in the armed services.

My personal friends who made "the big decision" are calling and emailing me now to ask if things are really looking better these days back home in California.  Apparently, their new lives are not what they had bargained for.

I have made many new acquaintances on the internet who regularly visit Californiality.  These former Californians tell me that this blog makes them feel at home and, yes, quite homesick for the Golden State.

I have previously addressed this issue, based on my own experiences, in the post, "Ex-Californian Hell".  During a couple of California's past down-cycles, I had made the same decision to split.  I happily returned with a changed perception of what life's really about.

I prefer to live in the best location in the best society in the best state in the best nation in the world.  Nothing less.  Whatever it takes.  Period.

I can hear some of you starting to cry right now.  It's okay.  Let it all out.

You might as well go and get that box of Kleenex now, 'cause the following video will have you bawling your eyes out --- especially if you're dying to come home.  It's a real tearjerker, courtesy of California icon, Joni Mitchell.

I've been where you are.  I know what you're going through.  I know the pain, guilt, regret and heartache.  You feel like you went from the frying pan into the fire, and you did not see it coming.  You really, really tried.  You honestly did.

Come back, my friend.  Come back to folks who know the real you.  Come back to freedom and acceptance.  Come back to your life.  Come back to your dreams.

Carly Fiorina: Christian Conservative

March 15, 2010

Carly Fiorina is a 2010 Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from California, she is conservative, and she is a Christian.

I had the opportunity to speak candidly with a California woman who knows a lot about Carly Fiorina as a friend, a colleague, a woman and a spiritual individual of faith.

Our talk was fascinating, but with a stipulation of anonymity.  The woman does not wish to jeopardize the Fiorina senatorial campaign in any way, which I completely understand and respect.

Carly is described as being assertive, aggressive at times, resourceful, and originally creative.  She is an innately curious fact collector.

Her quest for knowledge and love of exploration always have her initiating new enterprises and approaches in business.  Carly can notice the smallest details while performing different jobs simultaneously.

The only difficulty, apparently, is that Fiorina's free spirit sometimes conflicts with the caution and orderliness of her inner self.  Carly is, as most know by now, a cancer survivor.

Soul-searching and re-prioritizing have been thematic over the past few years for Fiorina.

Her life is now at a stage when she is looking back over what she has accomplished in life. After evaluating and understanding exactly what she has learned, and what it means for her personally, Carly has made a number of personal changes.

Carly Fiorina began a relationship with Jesus Christ a few years ago and has a "growing faith", according to Bill Hybels, senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois --- a megachurch where 23,000 worshipers attend each week.

Hybels is the author of many Christian books on the subject of Christian leadership, and he is the founder of the Global Leadership Summit.

Fiorina has been a featured as a speaker at Hybels' Leadership Summit, where Bishop T.D. Jakes and Southern California megachurch pastor Rick Warren have also been featured speakers.

Spirituality, in order to appeal to a very practical individual like Carly, must be applicable to real lives, and in real time --- not merely religious traditions.  It must transform.

According to my candid conversation with one who knows her, Fiorina has been turning attention to spiritual and inner needs in her life, and it is a deeply personal matter.  The effects have been liberating and have increased Carly's capacity to fully experience life.

A Carly Fiorina quotation that I agree with is:

"People will respond to higher standards quicker than low ones. Pure Christian love does not presuppose approval of all conduct."

Carly is an inspired, regenerated woman who is up for the next challenge.  I wish her much success on her spiritual journey, and in her professional endeavors.  Go, Carly!

Fiorina is enjoying tremendous support from California's Christian community.  After all, there are now more Christian megachurches in California than anywhere.  Almost all of the many Christians I know are voting for Carly at the polls.

Carly Fiorina's personal views are conservative and pro-life.  She has won the 2010 endorsement of the California ProLife Council, the National Right To Life Committee, the Susan B. Anthony List, former Governor Sarah Palin and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Fiorina is an enthusiastic supporter of California's Proposition 8.

Montecito

March 14, 2010

Montecito is the jewel of Santa Barbara County and the ultimate in California splendor and seclusion.

Wedged between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Montecito is one of the wealthiest retreats in the world, one of the most gorgeous, and one of the most private.

Unified by publications like the Montecito Journal and Montecito Magazine, Montecito is an intimate community of 10,000 citizens.  The atmosphere is warm, family-oriented and, yes, celebrity-friendly.

Once one has experienced the magic of Montecito, nothing else compares. The tranquil, casually-elegant vibe of Montecito provides a matchless location to raise children.  Beverly Hills and Bel Air simply cannot compare.

Montecito excels in community closeness, family values, and stunning beauty.

In Montecito, beauty is guaranteed. The Montecito Association ensures that all new construction conforms to strict aesthetic building codes, so that Montecito's Spanish Mediterranian architectural community theme prevails.

Montecito's beaches are just an hour from Los Angeles, making it a magnet for Hollywood royalty. Charlie Chaplin built the Montecito Inn during the 1920s. Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier married in the seclusion of San Ysidro Ranch, where John F. Kennedy enjoyed a honeymoon with Jacqeline Kennedy.

Legendary American families, like the Rockefellers, Carnegies and DuPonts, each realized the dream of a magnificent estate in Montecito.

The most famous Montecito property open to the public is Lotusland, whose owner, Madame Ganna Walska, created an eye-popping 20 acres of themed gardens.  It's like the Garden of Eden on the Pacific --- and very photogenic.

Also open to the public is Casa del Herrero, an estate with exquisite Italian and Spanish antiquities and gardens designed by famed architects.  It is an official National Historic Landmark that stuns with grandeur.

Today, many successful Californians call Montecito home, including a great many famous musicians, actors, producers, writers, artists and business moguls like Oprah Winfrey.

No, Oprah is not the Queen of Montecito.  Local folks all know that Oprah lives on East Valley Road and they let her enjoy her privacy --- just like they enjoy theirs.  Having spent up to $75 million for a home, Montecitans highly value privacy, seclusion and peace.

The prestigious establishments of higher learning in Montecito include Westmont College and the Music Academy of the West, which hosts a summer music festival for the community with concerts and workshops directed by famous composers, conductors, and artists.

Montecito locals sometimes act like the 15-minute drive to Santa Barbara is torture, but they gladly make the drive for the Santa Barbara Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, Center Theatre, the International Film Festival and concerts at the Santa Barbara Bowl.

Montecito is a spectacular place to vacation.

The Montecito experience is at its most extreme with a stay at the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel, a leased exotic car from Montecito Motors, and a chartered jet from Stratos.  The Montecito Country Club is a must.

Montecito is a supreme place to live.

When folks decide to put down roots in Montecito, wealth management services are fantastic at Montecito Bank & Trust.  As well, there are several real estate professionals in town who know Montecito's finest properties.

One of Montecito's real estate experts, Kathleen Winter, has put together an enchanting video of a property I am totally in love with --- the music is great!

California Kicking Recession

March 12, 2010

Good news is starting to pile up in California. The genius, generosity and grit of Californians is having a positive effect on California's economy, real estate, technology and trade.

The State of California received more revenue than officials had expected in February, leading Controller John Chiang to declare that the state is "headed on a slightly better path".

Californians getting income tax refunds, not "IOU"s!

General fund revenues were $480 million higher than the 2010-11 budget had projected, corporate tax revenues beat estimates by 89.2 percent, or $119 million, and sales tax bested projections by 17.9 percent, or $544 million.

California sales tax receipts are up 10.1 percent from last year and corporate taxes are up 2.6 percent from February of 2009. This is the third consecutive month in which revenues have improved in the state.

California's export trade rebounds further!

According to Jock O'Connell, an international trade expert at the University of California Center Sacramento, the value of shipments exported from California in January increased by 18.5 percent compared to January of 2009 --- the third consecutive month of year-over-year increases in the state's export trade.

The center's analysis of trade data released Thursday by the U.S. Commerce Department shows $10.3 billion in goods were shipped overseas in January. That beats the $8.7 billion the state's exporters shipped in January 2009. That’s a 19 percent increase compared to a year ago!

California agricultural products accounted for a lot of the increase, improving a whopping 47 percent from a year ago, while manufacturing also showed a good jump of 10 percent.  Way to go, Central Valley!

The data also shows the increase in exports was reflected at California's major ports, with the number of loaded shipping containers leaving the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland rising by a surprising 26.8 percent over last year.

Microsoft's California Jobs Initiative!

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled a training initiative funded by Microsoft Corporation that gives California residents free access to Microsoft's online computer courses and certification exams.

Microsoft will distribute 166,500 vouchers that could be redeemed online for courses that range from basic computer training --- such as web navigation --- to more formal professional certifications in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel and Access.

Southern Californians excited again about real estate!

Many thousands of potential home buyers will be at the Southern California Home Buyer's Fair this weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The big event features 50 seminars to help home buyers, including "California Housing Market Outlook," by the California Association of Realtors.

To kick off this weekend's excitement, Million Trees L.A. will give away 200 FREE shade trees to residents of the City of Los Angeles!

By the way, Christopher Nassetta, president and CEO of Hilton Worldwide, has just sold his Los Angeles home.  For how much?

California Club

March 11, 2010

The California Club in downtown Los Angeles may be the least famous private club in the world --- and California Club members like it that way.

Established in 1887, the very exclusive California Club embraces 123 years of tradition, secrets and elite power. L.A.'s most exclusive members-only club enjoys the reputation among jet-setters as one of planet earth's most powerful gathering spots.

Several generations of members, including titans of international business, religion, government and royalty, have gathered at the California Club as they still do today.

The Clubhouse is located in a landmark structure in the heart of downtown Los Angeles and is a premiere setting for many of the world's most important social events.

While many have speculated that this hush-hush private club is ground-zero for Illuminati globalists, I know it to be a place where the guest list for its larger events would make any head spin.  Truly jaw-dropping, intimidating and totally unimaginable.

Surrounded by skyscrapers, the California Club's Beaux Arts-styled eight story building was created by legendary architect Robert D. Farquhar in 1929.  In addition to the finest antiques, handcrafted furniture and rare imported fabrics, the Clubhouse is decorated with an exquisite collection of hypnotic paintings by coveted and renowned artists.

Once one has been "inside", 538 South Flower Street can never be forgotten --- or publicly discussed.

The California Club is globally recognized for its sumptuous gourmet dining, hosted by one of the world's top chefs.  The main dining room is formal and awe-inspiring, and the Club's well-protected wine cellar is whispered about among insiders worldwide.  The attentive service is superb.

The Clubhouse has many dining rooms, a lavish ballroom, top-secret private meeting rooms, three floors of luxurious sleeping quarters, full bars, a well-stocked library, an executive business center, a gym, saunas, steam rooms and an outdoor dining patio on the third floor for enjoying the city lights of Los Angeles without street noise.

The California Club is from an another era, and I would venture to say that it's from a completely different dimension.  The level of confidentiality, privacy and secrecy is extreme when the Club hosts its highest-level affairs.

Some still refer to the California Club as the real "Hotel California", while others call it "Secret Society Central".  Is it true?

... I'm not at liberty to say.

California Governor Candidates SING!

March 9, 2010

Richard Aguirre, Jerry Brown, Steve Poizner and Meg Whitman must immediately form a rock music group.  California's entertainment industry and music fans demand it!

Just imagine... the Grammys!  The glory!  The groupies!  I can feel the excitement from the Silicon Valley to San Diego and all the way to Sacramento.  Totally genius!

These four leading candidates in the 2010 race for California governor could release a smash album and raise millions of campaign dollars.  The profits from album sales would be split four ways evenly.  This would level the campaign finance playing field, somewhat.

What world famous supergroups would Aguirre, Brown, Poizner & Whitman remind Californians of?

ABBA was a hugely popular group back in the day, with the group's name consisting of the four members' initials.  I wonder, though, could our new group "ABPW" see the same level of success?  Hmmm...

The Beatles were phenomenally gigantic.  If we match our four California gubernatorial candidates up against the "Fab Four", which candidate would be which Beatle?  Let's see:
  • John Lennon was the unconventional and revolutionary Beatle.  The best match is Richard Aguirre as John.
  • Paul McCartney was always the prettiest and most delicate looking Beatle.  We'll let Meg Whitman be Paul.
  • George Harrison was the spiritual Beatle.  Jerry Brown meditates as a real Jesuit priest, so he is our George.
  • Ringo Starr was always either ignored or picked-on.  Steve Poizner has the same complaints.  Ringo?  Bingo!
While nobody wants to sing the lyrics to "Taxman", it WAS written and sung by George Harrison.  Sorry, Jerry Brown.  You'll have to sing those dreadful words as you are our George.  That's show biz!

Van Halen is one of the greatest rock music acts to have ever come from California, with singer David Lee Roth epitomizing the long-haired blond rock star.  Richard Aguirre has the long blond hair, so he's our "Diamond Dave".

Okay, so there's another California candidate for governor who's blonde and wants to sing lead --- eMeg --- but that arrangement has been known as "Van Hagar" for two decades already.  Please, Meg, don't be Sammy Hagar.

Music industry insiders would suggest that our California candidates perform classic crowd-pleasers, like:
  • "Sittin' on the Dock of the eBay"
  • "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"
  • "I Will Survive"
  • "Can't Buy Me Love"
  • "Stand By Me"
  • "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
  • "Come Together"
  • "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?"

Naturally, the encore should be "California Dreamin".

For their first hit single, it's been suggested that Aguirre, Brown, Poizner & Whitman remake the classic 1972 hit song "Sacramento" by the legendary group Middle of the Road.  (Even this group's name seems appropriate for California's 2010 gubernatorial campaign.)

The following video of the original version of "Sacramento" shows the blonde singer (Meg Whitman) --- along with her THREE male bandmates --- on the "campaign train" to...

California, Australia and Water

March 8, 2010

Since 2000, Australia has experienced higher temperatures, lower water reserves, and dried-up agricultural crops in the nation's drought of the century.

Australia's positive progress now has California water managers' full attention.

To deal with its crisis, Australia has made a $50 billion government investment in water infrastructure, cut water allocations to farmers by 70 percent, and slashed household water use to 25 percent of what is used in Californian homes.  So far, it's working.

California's water managers are increasingly looking to Australian policies as the future for this state.

Tim Brick, chairman of the Metropolitan Water District board of directors, and a delegation of California water leaders recently visited Australia to learn some lessons on water management from down under.

Australia is the driest inhabited continent on Earth, but it has fertile areas, like the Murray-Darling river basin, that have made Australia --- like California --- a major exporter of agriculture.  Drought has threatened that, according to Jennifer McKay, Professor of Business and Water Law at the University of South Australia.

The fabled land of koalas and kangaroos has made extreme changes in how it manages its water resources, from technology innovation to rationing to adjustments in how government manages water. And, like California, Australia has faced increasing demands for environmental protection.

Professor McKay commented before a hearing of the California Assembly's Select Committee on Regional Approaches to Addressing the State's Water Crisis, held recently in Sacramento.

"There was a crisis and there was no choice but change. Fundamental change is possible, and now our system is quite set up to handle climate change," McKay said.

Committee chairman Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim) stressed the importance of California's water managers implementing practical strategies which actually work.  "We sometimes think we know it all in California. And there are times we don't. It is important to look to other states for their best practices, and every now and then it's good to look to other countries as well." he said.

Solorio highlighted Australia's success at reducing per capita water use to 30 to 50 gallons a day, compared with about 180 gallons in California.

Much of Australia's savings has come from reducing outdoor watering, capturing rainwater, installing dual plumbing in homes (one line for potable water and one line for recycled water), and mass use of water-efficient appliances and dual-flush toilets.

In 2009, California lawmakers passed legislation setting a goal of reducing urban water use by 20 percent by 2020.

"We are shameful in the volume of water we use in this state. It's embarrassing when we talk to people in other places around the world ... people fall out of their chairs when they hear how much water we use," said Wendy Martin, statewide drought coordinator for the Department of Water Resources --- who was also part of the recent delegation to Australia.

Estimates show California being 10 years behind Australia in making the dramatic changes that country did.

In addition to slashing household use, Australian officials made sensible cuts for agricultural and industrial water use, using technology to improve efficiency in those areas as well.  Every major city in the nation has built, or is building, a desalination plant.

While desalination projects are certainly in California's future, with one being constructed off the coast of Carlsbad, California can still greatly benefit from water conservation before relying heavily on desalination technology.

One of the most politically challenging changes Australia made to deal with its drought was to its government structure.  In the face of crisis, the individual states partially handed control over to the federal government --- a move that stunned California lawmakers at the hearing.

While some say there is a need for guidelines and strategy from the U.S. federal government due to 'climate change', it would certainly take a total life-threatening water emergency for Californians to hand over state control of water resources to the feds.

With all of the cultural differences between California and Australia, we certainly have a water crisis in common.  Let's put our innovative minds together more strongly toward localized solutions.

Together, we can make it happen.

Skinniest California Cities

March 5, 2010

A new ranking of America's skinniest cities shows that healthy habits make for thinner residents in several California cities.

Obesity rates in the top 10 least obese cities are an average of 15 percent lower than rates found in the nation's top 10 obese metropolitan areas and much lower than the national average of 26.5 percent.

Here are the California metro areas among the national top 10 skinniest, based on their percentage of obese residents:

   5. San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles (17.6 percent)
   7. Santa Cruz/Watsonville (17.9 percent)
   8. San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara (19 percent)
   9. San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont (19.2 percent)

The results are from recent nationwide Gallup polling in 187 U.S. metro areas.  Researchers calculated the participants' body mass index (BMI) using their self-reported height and weight, with a BMI of 30 or above considered as obese.

What makes a skinny city?  Healthy eating and exercise habits, of course!  The survey showed that nine out of the 10 least obese cities rank in the top third of the Gallup-Healthways Healthy Behavior Index, which measures eating and exercise habits.

Researchers found that most residents of the slimmest cities said they frequently eat fruits and vegetables, and exercise regularly --- at least 30 minutes three or more days a week. That contrasts the nation's 10 fattest cities, where less than half of the residents report exercising that much.

Gallup's research found that residents in nearly all of the nation's least obese cities report above-average access to affordable fruits and vegetables, having a safe place to exercise, having enough money to buy food, and having health insurance.

All of the skinniest cities have diabetes levels lower than the national average of 11 percent and heart attack rates below the national average of 4.6 percent.

How nice it is to see California in the top 10, four times, for something so positive.  Way to go, Californians!

Newport Beach: America's Wealthiest

March 4, 2010

Many areas of America are still being hit by the economic devastation of the 'Great Recession', but quite a few communities are surprisingly wealthy and comfortable --- with some California cities rocking the statistics.

Newport Beach, on the Southern California coast just south of Los Angeles, continues to be shockingly affluent compared to cities across the nation.

The famous California beach community's mix of extreme incomes and stunningly luxurious homes has just earned Newport Beach first place in the latest Portfolio.com ranking of America’s wealth centers.

Newport Beach's per capita income of $86,586 leads all of the 420 U.S. communities with populations above 75,000.  28.6 percent of Newport Beach households have annual incomes of more than $200,000.

The median value for homes in Newport Beach exceeds $1 million --- a distinction shared only with Santa Barbara, another jewel on the Pacific Coast.

Portfolio.com created a six-part formula to assess the affluence of all 420 areas with populations of more than 75,000. Communities with high income levels and large inventories of expensive homes earned the highest scores.

Included in the top five in the overall U.S. rankings are Pleasanton in Northern California and Santa Monica in Southern California.

The highest-rated major city with a population of over half a million is San Francisco, which ranks eighth on the list of U.S. wealth centers.

Who needs a "new California" when our same old California still rocks?

First Female CA Police Chiefs President

March 1, 2010

The California Police Chiefs Association will install its first female president this Wednesday. California's longest-tenured female police chief, San Mateo Police Chief Susan E. Manheimer, will take the helm of the organization's executive board.

Manheimer has served on the board of directors of the 338-member organization since 2002 and has been third vice president for the past three years.  She will be named as President Manheimer at the group's annual training symposium at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose on March 3rd.

The accomplished police chief had worked as a radio reporter before enrolling in the police academy.  She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in business management from Saint Mary's College in Moraga and a masters in educational leadership from San Diego State University.

Before being named the top cop in San Mateo, Chief Manheimer served 16 years with the San Francisco Police Department, where she specialized in robbery decoy work and gang/violent-crime suppression.  She was appointed Chief of Police for the City of San Mateo in May of 2000.

Chief Susan Manheimer has a record of consistent commitment to neighborhood policing and has utilized many innovative programs, such as the highly-successful Homeless Outreach Team and the Adopt-a-School program.

Manheimer led the way in forming creative partnerships with the community and allied agencies including the Tongan Interfaith Council for Central San Mateo County, the Juvenile Hall Assessment and Diversion Center, and the countywide Gang Task Force which she helped to found.

Susan Manheimer has served as a governor’s appointee to the State Advisory Group for Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Crime Prevention.  She also served as a board member of Fight Crime Invest in Kids California, the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center, and the University of San Francisco Law Enforcement Leadership Institute.

As chief, Manheimer favored "new millennium policing". The community-based approach partners police with other criminal justice agencies and public health agencies, substance-abuse counselors, group homes for the elderly and youth, and other resources to deal with the many problems for which police are often the first ones called.

Susan Manheimer’s father was a city councilman in the Bronx, NY, and he was her public service role model. Her grandparents, who fled persecution in Eastern Europe and struggled to establish themselves in America, provided inspiration for her being in a nontraditional field for women.

"I like nothing better than talking to young girls and women about how they can be the chief of anything they want to be," Manheimer says. "In the end, it’s what my parents instilled in me and is the key to my success. Also, the more diverse we are, the more those below us will strive to succeed. Being a role model is more important now than at any other time in my career."

Chief Manheimer resides in San Mateo County with her husband, Michael, and adult children Sarah and Jesse. She enjoys skiing, hiking and rowing, and she exudes California innovation and confidence.

I wholeheartedly congratulate the first female California Police Chiefs Association President, with prayers and blessings for much success.  Go, Susan!

#1 California Poem on the Internet Exclusively on Californiality.com

"I AM CALIFORNIA"

I am the creative genesis persisting amid chaos; the idea made manifest.

I am the eternal state of "becoming".

Ever changing, morphing and mutating, my essence reflects the mind of my Creator.

Purity, perfection and productivity are my principles.

I am innovation; the perennially new. I am relentless forward momentum.

I am the unity of the spiritual, the mental and the physical. I am symmetry and balance.

I am the created who recreates; the blessed who blesses; the beloved who loves without prejudice.

I am expression; the vision seen; the voice heard; the thought interpreted.

Races, religions and cultures are my colors, hues and shades. Variety is my lifeblood.

I am the portrait of humanity which beckons an impassioned brush stroke from every hand.

I am relationship; always conversing, sharing, belonging, reciprocating, accepting and providing.

I am contrary; an oasis in the desert; order from chaos; beauty from ashes; hope from despair; unity from diversity; light from darkness.

I am information, communication, technology and intelligence always seeking Wisdom.

Ever the student of the Eternal, I instruct willing minds through my failures and successes.

I am the experience; the be-in; the adventure; the journey; the trip. I am interactivity and participation.

I am the ultimate; the zenith; the apex; the extreme; the max. Limitless minds are my companions into the timeless unknown.

I am to be merged with; not to simply be admired from afar. My visions are to be shared; my dreams are to be realized; my desires are to be consummated.

I am the fruit of ambition, effort and achievement. I am the rarest wine to be tasted, savored and thoroughly enjoyed, not merely collected.

Golden, priceless and breathtaking, I am the star-studded dream, the quaking vision, and the imagination on fire.

I am California.
