Celebrating Dennis Hopper
May 31, 2010
Dennis Hopper, the award-winning actor, poet, filmmaker and artist, has just left the planet --- and on the best Harley Davidson motorcycle imaginable, no doubt. The 'Easy Rider' has disappeared into a heavenly sunset, so the '60s have now ended. Officially. Completely. Totally.
The end of an era has many people stopping to reflect. The passing of Dennis Hopper has Hollywood, Laurel Canyon and Venice Beach remembering the greatest of 1960s icons. Hopper was "Born To Be Wild", and he never slowed down at all.
Everyone in L.A. knew Dennis Hopper, yet many thought he was 15 years younger than his age. The guy was so full of 'piss and vinegar' that he always seemed young and rebellious. His first appearance in a film, after all, was opposite James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause.
As the writer, director and star of 1969's Easy Rider, Hopper enjoyed an untouchable iconic stature which lasted all the way to the end of his life.
Though many are currently referring to him as a 'hell-raiser', Dennis Hopper was a sensitive artist. A prolific painter, sculptor and photographer, his artistic works are renowned. You can bet that his paintings, sculptures and photographs is now skyrocketing in value.
"I am just a middle-class farm boy from Dodge City and my grandparents were wheat farmers. I thought painting, acting, directing and photography was all part of being an artist. I have made my money that way. And I have had some fun. It's not been a bad life," said Hopper about his time on earth.
Though dying of prostate cancer, Hopper was working at his home in Venice last week, helping curate an exhibition of his photographs at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
Michelle Phillips, former member of The Mamas and The Papas and songwriter of "California Dreamin", was briefly married to Dennis Hopper.
As Michelle celebrates her birthday this week, memories of old times with Dennis are sure to color the celebration of her birth as the world celebrates her former husband's life and death. Knowing Michelle, the memories will be happy --- although it was all a lifetime ago.
Countless fans are now visiting Dennis Hopper's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, right in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater. Though he is world-famous for his acting and filmmaking, art collectors worldwide are remembering Dennis Hopper the Artist --- who began collecting art himself with the purchase of an early work by Andy Warhol.
Only a few days ago, I wrote about about Hans Holbrecht, the German biker who was inspired by Dennis Hopper and Easy Rider to fulfill his own California Dream after a terminal cancer diagnosis in Berlin. The post, "German Biker's California Miracle", is a very emotional tribute to a connection between the two men.
The irony of my recent post has put the biggest tear in my eye today.
Easy Riders Never Die.
