Celebrating Dennis Hopper

May 31, 2010

Dennis Hopper, the award-winning actor, poet, filmmaker and artist, has just left the planet --- and on the best Harley Davidson motorcycle imaginable, no doubt.

The 'Easy Rider' has disappeared into a heavenly sunset, so the '60s have now ended.  Officially.  Completely.  Totally.

The end of an era has many people stopping to reflect.  The passing of Dennis Hopper has Hollywood, Laurel Canyon and Venice Beach remembering the greatest of 1960s icons.  Hopper was "Born To Be Wild", and he never slowed down at all.

Everyone in L.A. knew Dennis Hopper, yet many thought he was 15 years younger than his age.  The guy was so full of 'piss and vinegar' that he always seemed young and rebellious.  His first appearance in a film, after all, was opposite James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause.

As the writer, director and star of 1969's Easy Rider, Hopper enjoyed an untouchable iconic stature which lasted all the way to the end of his life.

Though many are currently referring to him as a 'hell-raiser', Dennis Hopper was a sensitive artist.  A prolific painter, sculptor and photographer, his artistic works are renowned.  You can bet that his paintings, sculptures and photographs is now skyrocketing in value.

"I am just a middle-class farm boy from Dodge City and my grandparents were wheat farmers. I thought painting, acting, directing and photography was all part of being an artist. I have made my money that way. And I have had some fun. It's not been a bad life," said Hopper about his time on earth.

Though dying of prostate cancer, Hopper was working at his home in Venice last week, helping curate an exhibition of his photographs at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

Michelle Phillips, former member of The Mamas and The Papas and songwriter of "California Dreamin", was briefly married to Dennis Hopper.

As Michelle celebrates her birthday this week, memories of old times with Dennis are sure to color the celebration of her birth as the world celebrates her former husband's life and death.  Knowing Michelle, the memories will be happy --- although it was all a lifetime ago.

Countless fans are now visiting Dennis Hopper's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, right in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater.  Though he is world-famous for his acting and filmmaking, art collectors worldwide are remembering Dennis Hopper the Artist --- who began collecting art himself with the purchase of an early work by Andy Warhol.

Only a few days ago, I wrote about about Hans Holbrecht, the German biker who was inspired by Dennis Hopper and Easy Rider to fulfill his own California Dream after a terminal cancer diagnosis in Berlin.  The post, "German Biker's California Miracle", is a very emotional tribute to a connection between the two men.

The irony of my recent post has put the biggest tear in my eye today.

Easy Riders Never Die.

Queen Latifah's California Dream

May 30, 2010

Queen Latifah is phenomenal.  The award-winning actress, singer, entrepreneur, model, rapper, author and rocker is living her California Dream and loving it.

Latifah is a Hollywood doll who started life in 1970 on the east coast as Dana Owens.  The stage name, "Queen Latifah" matches her dramatic persona, though.  By any name, she totally rocks.

I remember first seeing Latifah as a new rapper back in the day.  She was very appealing as a tough tomboy chick.  Now she's a sexy cover girl and movie star who buys expensive homes in Los Angeles.

I think I've seen every movie Latifah has ever starred in.  What a great actress.  Very attractive and approachable.  I will be shocked if she doesn't end up with an Oscar.  She's a natural.

What's my favorite Queen Latifah film?  They're all good, so it's hard to choose.  It's probably Last Holiday, in which Latifah starred with LL Cool J, Timothy Hutton and French superstar GĂ©rard Depardieu.  What an inspiring movie!

I can honestly say that I have enjoyed everything that Queen Latifah has done, whether it be her movies, music, books, interviews, TV shows or photo shoots.

I know a lot of Californians who are totally into Queen Latifah.  What I've consistently heard from folks is that they love her personality.  She's strong, sensitive, funny, down-to-earth, and authentic.  That makes her popular and extremely marketable, obviously.

When she released her jazzy album, The Dana Owens Album, everybody I know was like, "Oh my God, she can really sing!"  Everybody was already familiar with Queen Latifah as a rap superstar, but yes --- she's a tremendous singer with a mellow, soulful voice that's very appealing and classy.

Whether she's called Dana Owens or Queen Latifah, the lady oozes total Californiality.  She's confident, adaptable, fearless, creative, entrepreneurial and full of inner and outer strength and beauty.  She's the whole package.

Queen Latifah loves California and California loves her.  She is as much a part of the landscape of the Golden State as the famous palm trees.

Celebrating Gary Coleman

May 28, 2010

Gary Coleman, the former candidate for California Governor, has graduated into the next dimension.  What a long, strange trip it's been.

I have always liked Gary Coleman.  He has been a survivor since he was born.  He was fearless and determined, no matter what was hurled at him.  He was a constant inspiration to millions of average people who identified with his struggles.

Coleman is most famous for his role on the hit television show, Diff'rent Strokes, where he even got to co-star with Nancy Reagan, the former First Lady of California. How cool is that?

Gary shot to Hollywood superstardom as a talented kid after humble beginnings back East.  His subsequent life as a California celebrity never changed the intelligent and generous person he was.  Gary Coleman was authentic, plain-spoken, and extremely down-to-earth.

Coleman had a knack for closely connecting with the average television viewer.  He had a pronounced talent for laying out complicated and abstract issues in simple terms through hip vernacular.  He was a man people could easily relate to. Gary Coleman was cool.

He bravely lived his life, openly and on-camera, for all to plainly see the good, the bad and the ugly of his challenging life.  He experienced success and failure, acceptance and discrimination, heaven and hell, all without any sugar-coating.  Coleman's life was never fake.  It was raw.

I remember California gubernatorial candidate Gary Coleman's appeal in 2003.  A great number of workaday Californians cheered for his campaign.  Out of 135 candidates, Coleman finished at #8.  Many thousands of Californians voted for him instead of Gray Davis or Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Gary resonated with real people as a real guy with guts.

When his acting career experienced a lull, Gary Coleman took a job as a security guard without missing a beat.  Many still respect him for "keeping it real".  Gary was like us --- he did what needed to be done to keep his life going.  He earned the admiration of millions during his life, so the current outpouring from millions at his death is proportionate, appropriate, and very emotional.

We are here on Earth to use what God gave us; to experience Life as active participants, not merely as spectators.  Coleman lived his adventure aggressively to the very last breath while sharing the ride with us all.

Gary Coleman Was Here.

California's Most Shocking Political Ad

May 26, 2010

Democratic candidate for California Governor Richard Aguirre has just released the most shocking political advertisement of the 2010 gubernatorial race.

Posed with a surfboard, his dog, and with the Southern California surf in the background, the telegenic blond surfer goes straight for the jugular vein of his Democratic California Primary opponent Jerry Brown.

Aguirre is righteously angry and shows absolutely no mercy.

Over a classic rock music bed, Richard Aguirre hits Jerry Brown with an exposing attack which is causing a political earthquake all over the Golden State.  All of California is waiting for Brown's response while buzz spreads quickly.

Here is the entire text, word-for-word, with video following:

"I'm Richard Aguirre, and I'm out for the Democratic nomination for California Governor.

The office of Governor is the most important position in the State of California.  It has the power to determine our futures and dreams.  We can't leave it up to the special interest politicians and the corporate elite.

I'm a Californian, a businessman, a homeowner, a University of California graduate, and a California surfer.  With over 200,000 followers on Twitter, and 100,000 hits on the website a day, you're wondering why you haven't heard about me on the mainstream news?

It's because the politicians and the media are in bed together.  They've become criminals and thugs for their special interest power companies.  So, listen up:

Where are we?  We're over 52-billion dollars in debt, power and water prices are going through the roof, and there's taxes on everything we do.

And what's my opponent Jerry Brown doing about it?  He's having his thugs hack my website and trying to get me taken off of Wikipedia.  He's stealing my speeches and used them at the California Democratic Convention, and he's avoiding a Democratic Primary debate at all costs.

Jerry Brown brags on his Facebook and Twitter that he's a 40-year lifelong California politician, and this is the kind of experience we need?  Who in California is going to vote for a lifelong incumbent and all their special interests?

We're Californians.  We're smarter than that!

My 'New California Prosperity Plan' will provide free power and free water to all Californians, and allow us to harvest and sell the surplus, and start to eliminate taxes in the state.

I know the economic problems that California is suffering from, and I have a real solution to fix them.  So, make sure you vote for Democrat Richard Aguirre on June 8th for California Governor."

California Gone to the Dogs

May 25, 2010

California's budget cutbacks have caused local dogs to jump onto surfboards to raise money for police officers.  Enough is eRUFF!

65 dogs entered the Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition to benefit the San Diego Police Department Canine Unit.  Thousands of spectators could not believe their eyes.

The unusual sight of furry, four-legged creatures of all shapes and sizes and breeds riding the waves of Southern California even attracted Hollywood celebrities like George Lopez, Owen Wilson and Marmaduke the Great Dane.

The smallest surf dog competitor was a 5-pound Pomeranian named Bobby Gorgeous, and the biggest competitor was an 85-pound Bernese mountain dog named Nani.

The standout pooch was a surfer girl doggie named Abbie, a small brown Australian kelpie, who clinched the 40 lb. and under division of the dog surfing contest after some extra-long rides which caused a lot of cheering a gasping from shocked onlookers.

It just goes to show that, in California, even the dogs will jump in and help raise money for a good cause.  These 65 dogs are heroes, and heroines, for jumping in and taking matters into their own hands... errr... paws.

Nixon for California Governor

May 23, 2010

Candidate for California Governor Richard Nixon was beaming with hope and excitement during his 1962 gubernatorial campaign.

After years of serving as a U.S. Senator, then as a U.S. Vice President, Richard Nixon was back in his home state and confidently running for Governor of California.

Nixon, a native Southern Californian from Orange County, loved the Golden State with a passion.  To serve as the state's Chief Executive was a childhood dream of "Dick" Nixon's, and he was ready to make his dream a reality.

Experienced, enthusiastic and famous, Richard Nixon was a candidate on fire and on top of his game.  He was an expert politician in his prime with a sharp mind, a great message, and a winning smile.

Many California voters fondly remember that magnetic, charismatic and passionate 1962 candidate for Governor of California.  It was the happiest campaign of his life while it lasted.

German Biker's California Miracle

May 20, 2010

Miracles happen in California.  Hans Holbrecht, a German tourist diagnosed with terminal cancer, tells everyone who will listen that California saved his life.  Literally.

I met Hans on the Pacific Coast Highway when we both stopped to fill up at a gas station.  When I said, "Nice motorcycle, man", I never anticipated the conversation that would follow.

Holbrecht, speaking perfect English with a heavy German accent, told me of his journey to California from his hometown of Berlin.  A busy communications industry executive, Hans lived "a life unfulfilled".  He suffered from chronic depression for many years.

"I had so many dreams for what I wanted to do in life, you know, but I just always did what I was told was the right thing.  Being satisfied with a good career just became my life, but no freedom was what I got," said Holbrecht.

I asked what led him to visit California.

Hans replied, "The doctors told me of my cancer.  There was no hope.  I thought maybe I should kill myself, but I got scared of that idea, you know?  Then I remembered when I was a boy, and I wanted to be like Dennis Hopper in "Easy Rider".  You know the old movie?  I always wanted to feel free."

Holbrecht bought an airline ticket to Los Angeles, said goodbye to family and friends, and left Berlin without looking back.  After landing at LAX, he bought a Harley Davidson at the first motorcycle dealer he could find.

The Pacific Coast Highway would be his final destination on earth.

"I wanted to enjoy the California wind in my hair just one time before I go off the cliff into the beautiful Pacific Ocean.  I did not think that I would meet so many nice and friendly people in California.  There is so much love here, you know?"

Holbrecht broke down sobbing in front of me.

I grabbed his arm and said, "Man, it's okay.  Everything's cool, alright?"

Hans looked at me with a penetrating seriousness and said, "Do you understand that California is why I am still alive?  I am so happy for the first time.  I even sent Arnold Schwarzenegger an email in our German language.  I said to him, 'Arnold, now I realize why you came here and why you stayed'."

Holbrecht stated that he had been on his motorcycle from the bottom of California to the top and back again.  He had met hundreds of Californians, and every person he met befriended him.

I (cautiously) asked about his cancer.

"It is gone!  It is gone, my friend.  I can no longer feel it.  I am free.  I am living what was the dream of my life.  My California Dream.  It is REAL.  I will not let go again!" Hans excitedly declared.

I asked the German biker what he discovered California to be after his experiences on PCH.

"California is the land of dreams.  Every person has different dreams from mine, but they are all living what they want to be.  I think I have lived ten lifetimes since being here.  California has given me freedom, and now I have so many friends.  It is Heaven."

I asked Hans if his trip is like the film, "Easy Rider".

"It is much better.  Different, but better.  It is the greatest adventure of my life.  I now want to live!"

I wished Hans farewell, then he rode off into the most perfect California sunset imaginable --- too awesome for words.

Welling-up with emotion, I hurried into the car and sped-off in the opposite direction.  All I wanted to give Hans Holbrecht was a song.

"Born To Be Wild".

'American Gigolo' Movie 1980

May 19, 2010

"He is the highest paid lover in Beverly Hills.  He leaves women feeling more alive than they've ever felt before."

That tagline from American Gigolo, the 1980 film starring Richard Gere, was blaring on every TV channel the year I entered adulthood.  Becoming a gigolo in Beverly Hills sounded pretty exciting to an ambitious, young L.A. metro dude like me.

Hearing the hot singer, Deborah Harry from Blondie, screaming "Call Me!" and moaning "roll me in designer sheets, I'll never get enough" in the movie's theme song really compounded a young dude's fantasy.

American Gigolo was a movie full of cheesy pick-up lines, bikini babes, beach houses, palm trees, Armani clothes, expensive sports cars, mansions, and every other kind of Southern California cliche' imaginable.

The film's bored, rich, 'cougar' housewives looked like supermodels on tranquilizers.  What young guy could resist?  My buddies and I thought that Richard Gere had the best job on earth.  Where could WE sign-up?

Finishing my college studies, then later working in some "cubicle career", did not sound as exciting to me as the fast-paced, adrenalin-pumping lifestyle led by Julian, the character played by Richard Gere.  No way, man.

Driving around Malibu, Beverly Hills and Palm Springs in a Mercedes convertible, with over-styled hair blowing in the wind, wearing designer clothes, and doing an occasional performance of "pleasure" seemed like a piece of cake --- and, yeah, you get PAID!  Way cool.

I imagined being at some hip Hollywood party, rubbing elbows with jet-setters and supermodels.  If someone should ask me what I do for a living, I would just say, "I'm the highest paid lover in Beverly Hills.  I leave women feeling more alive than they've ever felt before".

Don't laugh.  I could've pulled it off.  Really.

Did I do it?  Did I really become a hot Beverly Hills gigolo?  No way!  It would've been a little rough at family holidays when asked, "How's the job going?"  Whatever.  Totally.

Today, on the 30th anniversary of American Gigolo, it's funny to watch the old clips and listen to the "steamy" soundtrack.  Cheesy as hell.  These days, L.A. is different, Richard Gere is different, and so am I.

Time flies, man.

Just for the hell of it, I did my best hypnotic gaze in the mirror, and recited Julian's "seductive" words from the movie:

"You know who I am... I know who you are... I know what you're thinking... You know what I'm thinking... You wanna be here...  You wanna be with me."

I busted out laughing so hard that snot flew outta my nose.  Please!  If I tried to use a cheesy pick-up line like that nowadays, I'd be slapped clear across to Pacoima.

The other day, though, a sexy young supermodel-looking chick gave me "the eye" and told me I looked pretty hot --- for "somebody's dad".  Geez.

Yahoo! Associated Content Deal

May 18, 2010

California internet giant Yahoo! has formally agreed to purchase Associated Content, a website that hires freelance writers and video producers.

Some reporters are quoting unnamed sources who say the deal was for "$90 million in cash".  It was for more.

Associated Content's 600 million users and 380,000 contributors, as well as tens of thousands of advertisers, are experiencing a bit of shock today.

Some are referring to the new business arrangement as "Yassociated Content".

As Californiality recently reported, the internet search and advertising company has been making ambitious plans for the next year.  Today's announcement of the purchase deal with AC is just the beginning.

Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz said, "Combining our world-class editorial team with Associated Content's makes this a game-changer."

Bartz continues with, "Together, we'll create more content around what we know our users care about, and open up new and creative avenues for advertisers to engage with consumers across our network. These are important aspects of building engaging consumer experiences on Yahoo!, and one of the reasons why we're one of the most visited destinations online."

AC founder and president Luke Beatty stated, "The Associated Content team and our 380,000 contributors are looking forward to joining Yahoo! and to the opportunities that being part of a global Internet brand presents," said Luke Beatty, Associated Content founder and president, who further stated:

"Combining our crowd sourced content with Yahoo!'s distribution, world class editorial team and online marketing leadership will accelerate our growth as we continue to leverage our best-of-breed platform to deliver high quality compelling content on more than 60,000 topics."

Associated Content's current concentration is on an American users and content but Yahoo! will be expanding the AC platform for worldwide facilitation in 2011 --- and attracting numerous international advertisers in the process.

Associated Content was founded over five years ago by Luke Beatty in Denver, Colorado. Last year, the company hired a new CEO, Patrick Keane, formerly of CBS Interactive and GoogleTim Armstrong, CEO of AOL, was an early investor in the young company.

Associated Content attracts millions of unique visits per month, and their staff inspects more than 50,000 pieces of content each month for quality.

Many contributing AC writers are concerned about their compensation arrangements and their rights as content creators in the wake of today's announcement from Yahoo!  Right now, they are emailing me in a panic.

Yahoo! expects to complete the acquisition of Associated Content by the end of the Summer, but AC executives should probably calm down their content contributors immediately.

Yahoo!'s corporate plans for 2011 are well-researched.  The quality of content will improve and, with increasing advertising revenues, Yahoo! will certainly provide an enhanced compensation plan for content contributors.

Cisco Wins California State Medal

May 17, 2010

California Governor Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver have just honored Cisco with an award of the high distinction on behalf of the state.

The Governor and First Lady's Medal for Service for the California Business Volunteer Program of the Year 2010.

Cisco was formally and officially recognized as an outstanding California company with an innovative, high-impact employee volunteer program.

Cisco was recognized with the California Business Volunteer Program of the Year Award for its substantial volunteer service footprint in the Silicon Valley and throughout California.

Cisco employees donated thousands of volunteer hours, and millions of dollars, to California food banks, Habitat for Humanity, California teacher assisting programs, under-served California schoolchildren, and product grant programs.

California State Secretary of Service and Volunteering Karen Baker was full of praise for Cisco.

"Volunteer service is the cornerstone to strengthening and improving our communities. We applaud Cisco's unique 360-degree approach to community service. By encouraging team and individual employee volunteering as well as matching gifts from the Cisco Foundation, and creating sustainable and replicable programs, Cisco's strong commitment to volunteerism is providing positive and lasting impact on local communities throughout California and beyond."

On behalf of the corporation, Cisco Corporate Relations Vice President Terry Anderson responded thankfully and graciously.

"Cisco is honored to receive this award from the Governor and First Lady of California. This is a testament to Cisco's continued strategic efforts to align our strengths to meet critical community needs while fostering the incredible spirit of giving throughout the company. We commend the tremendous efforts and passion of our employees and their dedication to serving California communities in innovative and impactful ways."

Arnold's and Maria's fantastic program truly honors the best of California's great people and compassionate companies.  May volunteering always be remembered as a hallmark of the Schwarzenegger-Shriver legacy in California.

Be California Blonde!

May 16, 2010

There are blondes, then there are California blondes.  What's the difference?  What's so great about being a California blonde?

I'm told, by many blondes in California, that if "blondes have more fun", California blondes HAVE IT ALL.  One thing is for sure, though.  They sure get a lot of attention.

Personally, I think that hair color is just hair color.  The "California" part of blondeness is an attitude, a confidence, a gregarious vibe.  Getting a lot of heads turning is definitely a benefit for those who want the attention.

Most California blondes are (shock!) fake blondes.  The Golden State is the "bottle blonde" capitol of the world.  Southern California has the highest concentration of bleach blondes.  L.A. is totally the Blonde Mecca.

Worldwide, many people assume that the "Hollywood Bleach-Out" is like a religious California ritual for newcomers.  Not true.  California still allows non-blondes to become citizens --- for now.

Legendary California blondes include Marilyn Monroe, Farrah Fawcett, Heather Locklear, Christina Augilera, Angelyne, Nancy Sinatra, Jessica Simpson, Pamela Anderson, Mamie Van Doren, Courtney Love, Mae West, Suzanne Somers, Britney Spears, Jean Harlow, Cameron Diaz, Michelle Phillips, Paris Hilton, Goldie Hawn and, of course, Barbie.

Many have made the decision to "go blonde" for a career, for a relationship, for attention, or just for the fun of it.  Are you thinking about doing it?  You really don't have to live in California to have the appeal of a totally-hot California blonde.  Most of it has to do with attitude anyway, right?

California seriously rocks, though.

What about the dumb blonde jokes?  Gold-digger accusations?  Jealous non-blondes?  That's so lame.  Everyone else can just get over it.  No biggie, really.  Just think how empowered you'll feel when you flip your hair, flutter your eyelashes and say, "Like --- anyway --- what-EVER".

Whether you wanna be a total Valley Girl, a kamikaze blonde bombshell, a hot beach bunny --- or just legally blonde for your driver's license --- you can totally do it.  Easily.

"When the wannabe blonde student is ready, the teacher will come."

Richard Aguirre on Larry King Live?

May 14, 2010

Candidate for California Governor Richard Aguirre is unconventional in his campaign to turn the Golden State into a debt-free economic powerhouse.

More media outlets are taking notice of the gutsy grass-roots candidate who is challenging Jerry Brown for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination --- even media in New York.

Over the last 24 hours, I have received emails and phone calls from colleagues saying that producers from CNN's "Larry King Live" have been talking to Richard Aguirre.

I have confirmed this with Aguirre to be true.

Also, a writer from a NY-based national magazine and an editor from a major NYC newspaper have both emailed to ask me if Aguirre is "for real".

Having a past as a news and public affairs director qualifies me to give free advice, apparently.

I was happy to oblige, as I have featured Aguirre on Californiality several times.  I explained to both of these corporate media employees that I gladly give coverage to gubernatorial candidates who have a viable plan for improving California.

My official reply was as follows:

"The merits of Richard Aguirre's economic plan for California are worthy of media coverage and, in fact, national coverage.  Aguirre's plan for a profitable interstate resale of harvested solar power, desalinated water, and wind energy would be an effective plan in several other states as well."

I endorse no candidates nor political parties on this blog.  I will, however, highlight workable ideas when appropriate and beneficial to California --- regardless of where the idea is from.

For the sake of Larry King, an accomplished, professional journalist whom I've long admired, I would say this to his producers:

Two other 2010 California gubernatorial candidates have recently been guests on "Larry King Live".  In the name of fairness, an honest assessment of the newsworthiness of other candidates is appropriate and respectable.

There are other California candidates for governor who would prove to be enlightening and colorful personalities for "Larry King Live" viewers to enjoy, including Richard Aguirre.

$100 Million California Beach House

The stunning Portabello Estate, perched on the gorgeous Orange County coast, is the most dramatic beachfront mansion in California.

It's worth every bit of $100 million, totally.

Jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring and seizure-inducing, the Portabello Estate's design is like 'The Flintstones' meets 'The Jetsons' meets Lady Gaga.  This mega-expensive beach house is like California itself --- beautifully shocking.

Featured on many television shows, including Oprah, this Southern California 'trophy home' causes all who see it to either orgasm or gag.  Either way, the reactions to the 'futuristic luxury' design are extreme.

There are eight decadent bedroom suites which are magnificent enough to accommodate extraterrestrial royalty.  Guests in search of a snack can try the full gourmet kitchen or one of three kitchenettes.

Gotta take a leak?  Try one of the 15 bathrooms.  Wanna take a refreshing dip?  There are pools and spas all over the place and, oh yeah, there's the Pacific Ocean right outside.

The home's 180-degree ocean views are incredibly cool.

Bored?  No problem.  Try the in-house bowling alley, the movie theater, the classic automobile museum, or just blow some major bucks in Portabello's fine jewelry store.  That's right.  Diamonds.  They don't mess around here.

The high-tech security and controls in this joint would make the Silicon Valley blush.  It's like the Hotel California of the future on steroids.  You'll never want to check-out --- or ever leave.

This billionaire's beach bungalow totally rocks.  Portabello is a pad for serious players.

L.A. World Trade Booming

May 13, 2010

Los Angeles is experiencing a boom in international trade that has California's largest city sitting on top of America.

L.A. is back --- and the "Big Orange" is bigger and juicier than ever.

The Los Angeles area international trade industry is experiencing a dramatic rebound which is expected to continue throughout 2010 and 2011 with increased container activity at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The Los Angeles Customs District, ranked first in the nation for trade value, surpassed the second-ranked district, New York, which has seen a 24.5 percent drop in trade value.

Los Angeles is the reigning queen of U.S. international trade and shows no signs of slowing down in the future.

"The number of containers moved at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will grow by 10.2 percent in 2010, while the total value of two-way trade through the Los Angeles Customs District should increase by 9 percent to $308.5 billion," said Nancy Sidhu, the chief economist of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.

Southern California's current increase in world trade gives the Golden State a boost in confidence and economic power after emerging from a frightening period of recession.

China is the top international trading partner for the Los Angeles Customs District, with two-way trade of $156 billion.  Japan is second, with a trade value of $43 billion.

The top exports from Los Angeles are computers, peripherals, machinery, appliances and parts, with a value of $13 billion.

"The global economic downturn was a huge problem in 2009, as the economies of four of the Los Angeles Customs District's top five trading partners dropped into recession," said Jack Kyser, the founding economist of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.

"However, all five economies have now returned to growth mode, which bodes well for international trade activity in 2010," Kyser said. "This year, the two ports should see an increase of 10.2 percent in the number of containers moved."

In this Chinese Year of the Tiger, Los Angeles has, like the cat, landed on all fours and hit the ground running at full speed with a roar heard by every nation.

California's Favorite Rolls Royce

May 12, 2010

The Rolls-Royce Ghost is so popular in California that new buyers are ordering their own custom colors.  Individuality is still alive and well in the Golden State.

In California, "RR" now stands for "Recession-Recovered", and expensive status symbols are back in style.

At approximately $300,000, the new Rolls-Royce Ghost is the perfect accessory for a new face lift, bleach job or male enhancement procedure --- so I'm told.  Whatever floats your boat, dude.

Personally, I would want mine to have the same psychedelic paint job as the Rolls-Royce that John Lennon had in the '60s.  Why not go for the gusto?

I think I'll order one on the way to my local 99-cent store.

Of course, it goes without saying that Barbie is going to want a pink one.  California's most famous plastic icon already has her Rolls-Royce Ghost on-order, I'm positive.  The upholstery must be plastic.  Can you really see Barbie sitting on "dead animal flesh"?  Ewww.

Hollywood's most famous plastic icon, Angelyne, will have to break down and trade-in her legendary pink Corvette.  Tinseltown's billboard queen will need a convertible Ghost.  With all her posing and pouting for the paparazzi, Angelyne needs to be openly available for cameras --- especially for cleavage shots.

Maybe the State of California should scrap all plans for a high-speed rail system.  It might be more cost-effective to put a new Rolls-Royce Ghost in every Californian's driveway.  I'm just sayin'.

The Ghost is a beautiful car.  I am positive that Rolls-Royce would agree that every California citizen should drive one.  High-speed opulent luxury should be written into the California Constitution!

California Too Culturally Diverse?

California is culturally diverse beyond measure.  With 167 languages in a land of 40-million people, it is the world's Diversity Capitol, but has California gone too far?

Will the planet's "Migrant Mecca" soon reach the point of "immigration saturation" and pull back its welcome mat out of self-preservation?

California Welcomes the World

The Golden State has long welcomed people from everywhere.  Most visitors to California would like to stay.  Who could blame them for wanting a better life with greater opportunities in a modern Garden of Eden?

What used to be Ellis Island is now LAX and SFO.  Hang around at any international airport in California and you'll hear so many simultaneous conversations in every language that your head will spin.

In the 1970s, the Eagles sang about "everything, all the time --- Life In The Fast Lane".  These days, it's every NATION all the time in California.  Is this a bad thing?

Strength In Diversity

When you think about it, it's amazing that all peoples upon the earth have family members in California.  The Land of Gold is ultimately tied, by blood, to every royal throne around the world.

California would not be California without cultural diversity.  Many have suggested that the famous song, "We Are The World" (written by Californians Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson), should become the state's official anthem.

In the land of the perennially-new, a constant influx of global immigration ensures that new ideas and methods will always keep California on the leading edge of the future.  It's usually the brightest and most ambitious souls who journey to California, after all.

With a massive collection of innovative human minds, California can be called "Earth's Greatest Hits".  It is the creative powerhouse of the planet, hands-down.

California's Global Future

With diplomatic and economic ties to every world government, including the U.S., California is a force to be increasingly reckoned with in the future.  Every nation and corporation wants a piece of the Golden Pie --- if not the whole thing.

One might say that California is the woman that the whole world wants to date.  She is the ultimate celebrity.  Despite a lot of recent negative news coverage, California's gold is more valuable than ever --- don't be fooled.

If California and Earth are betrothed to each other, than prepare for the approaching consummation.  Global California is a new kind of empire, a different type of union, and a model for world management --- despite the steady apocalyptic "spin" perpetuated by California itself.

Put simply, the decks have just been cleared for high-rolling global investors.

Plenty of Room in California

Most of the Golden State is unpopulated and the geography is gigantic.  Throughout time, California's population is sure to continue increasing.  With endless solar energy and an infinite ocean to desalinate, the needs of millions of additional Californians can intelligently be met.

Most young Californians today are openly expressive (in their own very candid ways) about their desire to see cultural diversity displayed in their society.

To have every race, culture and idea in one society is the Great Dream of many throughout the world's history.  As long as California continues to appeal to the rest of humanity, cultural diversity will continuously refine and reshape the world's most-watched society.

The French Queen of California

May 10, 2010

In Los Angeles, she is known as The French Queen of California.  Close friends call her "Friday".

After a decade of living as a Californian, Friday felt like she was leading a double life, or more like a parallel life.  That would soon change forever.

Friday, a tasteful and cultured woman, had arrived in Los Angeles with a dream of being a professional Hollywood screenwriter.  She instinctively felt that a new life in California would be life-changing.

Paris just wasn't big enough for her.

Before long, Friday was hit with the reality of an expensive life in L.A., the intense competition of the Hollywood entertainment industry, and a relationship with an American man that would ultimately turn abusive and violent.

Memories, emotions, culture, religion and ambitions seemed endlessly suspended in France, though Friday was physically in California.  Life had become chaotic and lonely.  Something was missing --- herself.

Where, exactly, was the "other" Friday?  Was she still alive back in France, perhaps?

Friends in Los Angeles knew that Friday, a talented and vivacious personality, was losing more pieces of herself with each passing year.  They were all excited to hear that Friday would be, finally, taking a vacation --- back to France.

After being away for so many years, Friday was reawakened by familiar French surroundings.  It felt safe.  When she spoke her native Française, however, people kept saying how "American" her accent was.

Had living in California really changed her that much?  Was she even the same person anymore?

Friday hooked up with an old flame who reconnected her with the life she had previously enjoyed in the South of France.  Her beau's wining, dining, romance and hypnotic sensuality dominated her mind and emotions --- but not her will.

Still the same ambitious individual, Friday knew that France was no longer her home.  Strangely, Los Angeles was her reality, but her visit to France had rekindled Friday's RĂŞve Californien, her California Dream.

Friday had found her French self, and she returned home to L.A. to handle the loose ends created by her California self.  She was forever changed.

Back in Los Angeles, Friday's longtime American boyfriend recognized the change.  He responded violently.  For the first time, Friday fought back.  Her French self vanquished the enemy who had been slowly killing her California self.

Friday had become fully empowered.

Today, The French Queen of California is writing again with a new sense of priorities, a new independence, and a creativity which can only be awakened by the hard-fought and hard-won empowering California Experience.

California's Crazy Gubernatorial Election

May 6, 2010

To California voters, it's just another gubernatorial election cycle.  To political spectators around the world, the 2010 race for governor of California is turning out to be a melodrama par excellence.

The top buzzworthy California candidates for governor include a queen, a rebel and a hippie.

Where Else But California?

The road to the California State Capitol in Sacramento is being paved with unprecedented campaign spending and warnings of impending Martial Law and concentration camps.  Totally gnarly!

The three top candidates for California governor are capturing imaginations and headlines up and down the Golden State, across America and around the globe.

Who are these colorful characters seeking the most powerful state office in America?

The Queen

Meg Whitman, originally from New York, worked miracles for Hasbro, Disney, Mitt Romney and eBay after completing her studies at Princeton and Harvard.  Whitman served on the board of directors of Procter & Gamble, DreamWorks SKG and the controversial Goldman Sachs.

Meg Whitman wants to run California by using the corporate model.

Now a multibillionaire, "eMeg" has spent $100-million (so far) in her quest for the governor's office.  Whitman's endless television commercials are sure to continue airing statewide through the November election.  Yay.

Much of the voting public in California now refers to Whitman as "Queen Meg", as many feel that she is simply awaiting coronation after purchasing an election.  To many, Whitman's initial goal of establishing name recognition via TV and radio has resulted in painful overexposure.

The Rebel

Chelene Nightingale is a former model/actress who supporters refer to as "California's Joan of Arc".  Sounding the alarm against the New World Order and the Illuminati, Nightingale warns California voters of impending human RFID microchip programs, FEMA work camps and citizen surveillance.

A state's rights and gun owner's rights advocate, Nightingale is a strict constitutionalist whose goal is to defend Californians from globalist agendas which threaten California's sovereignty.

Speaking at Tea Party rallies all over the state, Chelene Nightingale loudly denounces government encroachment upon the rights of California citizens.  As governor, she would forcibly turn the water supply back on to California's Central Valley farmers --- and have any federal agents arrested who try to stop her.

Drafted by the American Independent Party and endorsed by the Constitution Party, Nightingale has been quoted as saying, "I have a rifle and I intend to use it".  Some of her supporters are, evidently, willing to die for their cause.

With a maximum polarizing effect, conservative Chelene Nightingale is oblivious to critics in her quest for California's "freedom from tyranny".  To the shock of California's establishment, she is attracting more supporters every week.

The Hippie

Jerry Brown was the youngest California governor in history when he won his election in 1974.  His gubernatorial campaign appealed to young voters, many of them hippies, during the height of the Watergate scandal.

The "anti-establishment" candidate had previously studied at a Jesuit seminary before attending the University of California at Berkeley and Yale Law School.  Soon after, Brown became an anti-Vietnam War organizer in the late '60s.

"Governor Moonbeam" refused to live in the California Governor's mansion or to be chauffered around in the governor's limousine.  Instead, the young Governor Brown opted for a Sacramento apartment and a compact sedan.

Brown did not want to offend his liberal hippie supporters by appearing to be a part of "The Establishment".

Now, the 72-year-old Jerry Brown wants to be California's oldest elected governor with a much-delayed third term.

The young environmental activist and anti-war organizer has become an old hippie in the eyes of those who still remember his former time in office decades ago.

Ironically, 2010 candidate Jerry Brown's biggest challenge may be convincing young California voters to trust a 40-year career politician.

No Candidate's Victory Is Guaranteed

With California's November 2nd General Election approaching, nobody can accurately predict which candidate will win what.  Speculation abounds, but the candidates will just have to slug it out to the finish.

Voters in the Golden State are used to the constant drama that is so very California.  It's the land of Hollywood, after all.  Intrigue, script changes and shocking scenes must be expected in a compelling production.  That's entertainment.

This time around, though, the characters and dialogue are unpredictable, irresistible and sure to keep spectators surprised and spellbound.

CA Governor Vetoes Smoking Ban

May 5, 2010

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed SB 4, the proposed ban on smoking in California parks and state beaches.

Light up, Californians!

Schwarzenegger sees a statewide smoke-free policy as "an improper intrusion of government into people's lives".  The governor believes that smoking is a local matter that should be decided by city and park authorities.

In his veto, Schwarzenegger points out a lack of regulation on locally-owned beaches as a reason not to sign the bill.  Also, the effects of such a policy might spread farther than just the parks and beaches that are directly involved.

Right-on, Arnold!  More state intrusion into our lives totally sucks.  Thank you for recognizing that fact.

Outdoor smoking bans have been strangely popular in recent years. A similar ban to the one proposed by SB 4 is already in place in Los Angeles County as well as other parts of the Golden State.

36 California cities have banned smoking on beaches, while 100 California municipalities have banned smoking in city and county parks.  Like, whatever.

I think some California cities have gone too far with their smoking bans.  When a Californian can't smoke a cigarette in their own car or apartment, it makes me wonder what's gonna get banned next.

Dull conversation?  Bad breath?  Kinky thoughts?  Ethnic food odors?  Messy hair?  Out of style fashions?  Crooked teeth?  Visible panty lines?  Farts?

Arrest them immediately!

Honestly.  What the hell is wrong with some people?  California is a place to experience freedom --- not a place to be controlled to death.  California already has more laws than the Roman Empire ever did.  ENOUGH!

Wanna be a buttinski?  Go live in China, where you'll be rewarded for ratting-out your neighbors.  Leave Californians alone, or else be prepared for us to come over and smell your breath --- and it better be minty-fresh.

With a governor who smokes, as well as a president who smokes, the time has come to lighten-up on folks lightin'-up.

California Business Success Tips

May 3, 2010

California is a great state for launching a new business or expanding an existing company.  Just ask any successful California entrepreneur or businessperson who has stuck with the Golden State.

Regardless of race, gender, lifestyle, national origin, religion or education, many business billionaires have been made in the most famous land of inventors, innovators and creators --- California, where dreams materialize.

I have known quite a few successful businessmen and businesswomen over the years.  Even the most casual chats with these sharp individuals can be better than a college business course for one who actively listens.

The most positive business influence throughout my life came through the successes of Conrad Hilton.  I can't help but measure all other business personalities against such a great man, but some individuals I've met have measured up pretty well.

For me, every conversation with great people in business is an equal exchange.  I receive the benefit of another's experience with failures and successes in the world of big business.  I reciprocate with an unusual perspective, brutal honesty, and a weird sense of humor.

Whether business leaders are from the entertainment, technology, manufacturing, financial or international trade industries, it seems that certain philosophies and practices are common to all whom I've met.

Here are some tips shared with me over the years from some very successful California businesspeople:
  • If you're busy building your own empire, you'll have no time to tear down somebody else's dream.
  • Life, itself, will teach you more than any college or university will ever be able to.
  • Experience refines one's perspective greatly.
  • Money and success are great, but you'll still want recognition.  Don't kid yourself.
  • Helping others to get ahead is the best way to advance yourself.
  • The most delicious success comes after the age of 40.
  • There's success, then there's California success!
  • A fool can easily handle poverty, but how many folks can really handle success and the big bucks?
  • All promotions are self-made.
  • Intelligence and wisdom are miles apart.
  • Small successes attract the big ones.
  • California is challenging for businesses, but the rewards are staggering.
  • Don't wait for success.  Hunt it down aggressively.
  • Know exactly where you're going, and watch the world step aside.
  • Maximize income, minimize expenses. Period.
  • Thoughts are contagious.  Be careful what you say.
  • A clear conscience is priceless.
  • Your tone speaks louder than your words.
  • Imitate only whom you truly admire.
  • Worry and success just don't mix.
  • Ego costs more money than anything else.
  • Imagination is worth a thousand PhD degrees.
  • Don't be perfect; just be honest.
  • Learn something from everyone you meet.
  • Happiness is all about DOING.
  • Love is wealth; fear is poverty.
  • Wisdom really is much better than gold.
  • Empower people, then watch your own dreams come true.
One thing I've noticed about businesspeople who are Californians is that they conduct business with a great vibe, a unique style and a sense of playful humor.  Business is fun!

Do you have a California business?  Are you starting a new enterprise in the Golden State?  May your success be as unlimited as your imagination is.

The "California Stop"

May 2, 2010

The California Stop is a kind of a rolling stop as a motorist arrives at a stop sign, and it's a driving habit that's become world-famous.

Illegal in today's California, the California Stop was briefly O.K. during the Golden State's gas crisis back in the 1970s.  Merely slowing down at a stop sign, and not coming to a full and complete stop, was meant to be a fuel-saving move.

When I visit other states, and I'm driven around by somebody else, it's funny when the driver rolls through an intersection and says "California Stop!" while running the stop sign.

I'm used to Californians still doing it, but thousands of miles away?

Who would have thought that the California Stop was as much of a famous California legend as Marilyn Monroe, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Hollywood sign?

Of course, I must state for posterity that the California Stop is totally illegal and against traffic laws everywhere these days.

"California Stoppers" will be issued a traffic citation, and the ticket is expensive.

DON'T DO IT.

I remember, back in my teenage days, when everyone was doing the California Stop --- and doing it freely and openly.  It was a hotter trend than pet rocks, mood rings, Chia Pets and bean bags.

It was so "far out" that even Governor Jerry Brown and Linda Ronstadt did the California Stop back then, though I'm positive that they would publicly deny it now.

#1 California Poem on the Internet Exclusively on Californiality.com

"I AM CALIFORNIA"

I am the creative genesis persisting amid chaos; the idea made manifest.

I am the eternal state of "becoming".

Ever changing, morphing and mutating, my essence reflects the mind of my Creator.

Purity, perfection and productivity are my principles.

I am innovation; the perennially new. I am relentless forward momentum.

I am the unity of the spiritual, the mental and the physical. I am symmetry and balance.

I am the created who recreates; the blessed who blesses; the beloved who loves without prejudice.

I am expression; the vision seen; the voice heard; the thought interpreted.

Races, religions and cultures are my colors, hues and shades. Variety is my lifeblood.

I am the portrait of humanity which beckons an impassioned brush stroke from every hand.

I am relationship; always conversing, sharing, belonging, reciprocating, accepting and providing.

I am contrary; an oasis in the desert; order from chaos; beauty from ashes; hope from despair; unity from diversity; light from darkness.

I am information, communication, technology and intelligence always seeking Wisdom.

Ever the student of the Eternal, I instruct willing minds through my failures and successes.

I am the experience; the be-in; the adventure; the journey; the trip. I am interactivity and participation.

I am the ultimate; the zenith; the apex; the extreme; the max. Limitless minds are my companions into the timeless unknown.

I am to be merged with; not to simply be admired from afar. My visions are to be shared; my dreams are to be realized; my desires are to be consummated.

I am the fruit of ambition, effort and achievement. I am the rarest wine to be tasted, savored and thoroughly enjoyed, not merely collected.

Golden, priceless and breathtaking, I am the star-studded dream, the quaking vision, and the imagination on fire.

I am California.
