"California Dreamin" The Seekers
Apr 29, 2011
"California Dreamin" is a 1966 pop California song by the legendary folk group The Seekers from Melbourne, Australia.
A cover version of the classic California anthem first recorded by The Mamas and The Papas, "California Dreamin" was given a sharper sound by the distinctive vocals of The Seekers' lead singer Judith Durham.
Though the song has been covered by hundreds of recording artists, the message and emotion of "California Dreamin" are never watered down. On The Seekers' version, the group's folk authenticity is as clear as a California blue sky.
Versions of the most widely-known musical tribute to California come from all over the world. People everywhere still relate to the song's lyrics, which tell of a longing for the warmth and freedom of the Golden State.
This particular Australian rendition clearly accentuates the composition's melancholic melody, striking harmonic structure and chord progressions. Songwriters John Phillips and Michelle Phillips were surely flattered by such a great Aussie version of "California Dreamin", recorded just months after their own version reached #1.
There are valid reasons why "California Dreamin" is perhaps the greatest of all California songs, and why Judith Durham & The Seekers are one of the best musical groups ever to have recorded the megahit.
