California Red Tide Apocalypse

Friday, September 30, 2011

California's red tide by day and glow-in-the-dark waves by night have got a lot of people freaked out.

Stretches along the scenic California Coast have tourists snapping photos of a real-time California apocalypse as the sea turns to blood before their very eyes.

Over the past few weeks, the Plague of the Crimson Tide has been building along the Pacific shoreline.

Recently the surf has begun to turn electric neon blue at night as bioluminescence emerges from the enveloping darkness.

Totally freaky, dude.

San Diego beaches, where millions tan, surf and frolic, have turned into a hellish revelation as the ocean turns to blood, then to glowing neon, every 12 hours.

The phytoplankton, called lingulodinium polyedrum, is expected by scientists to hang around into 2012.
