Betty White at 90!

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Betty White is 90 years old today.  A television actress for seven decades, Betty White makes age 90 look spectacular amid a youth-obsessed Hollywood entertainment industry.

Today, on Betty White's 90th birthday, it is amazing to look back on the TV superstar's long and successful career while realizing that the actress has not just one, but TWO hit television shows in 2012 --- "Hot in Cleveland" and "Off Their Rockers."

Betty White: Nonagenarian Superstar

Betty Marion White was born on January 17, 1922 and moved with her parents to Los Angeles, California when she was two years old.

She attended the Horace Mann School in Beverly Hills and she graduated from Beverly Hills High School.

White began her career immediately after high school graduation, working as a model, a stage actress and a radio actress on the programs "Blondie," "The Great Gildersleeve" and "This Is Your FBI".

Things began to take of when she got her own radio show, called "The Betty White Show."

Television Star, Pioneer and Producer

After regularly appearing on a popular television program in Los Angeles, Betty White was nominated for her first Emmy Award for Best Actress --- the very first award and Emmy category designated for women on television 60 years ago.

Shortly afterward, Betty White co-founded Bandy Productions with writer George Tibbles and Don Fedderson, creating the sitcom "Life With Elizabeth," which allowed White to have full creative control in front of the camera and behind the camera --- shocking for a woman in the early 1950s.

White also hosted and produced her own daily talk show for NBC, "The Betty White Show," in addition to acting in many commercials seen on LIVE television in Los Angeles (HD video below).

In a rare Hollywood movie role, Betty White played a female U.S. Senator in the drama, Advice and Consent, which was a wild political idea for a woman in 1962.

From the mid-1950s through the mid-1970s, Betty White became a national institution as the host of the Tournament of Roses Parade before she switched to hosting the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for a decade.

Known to TV viewers as "Elizabeth," "Sue Ann Nivens," "Rose Nylund," "Elka Ostrovsky," or simply the "Golden Girl,"  Betty White debuted her first sitcom the same year Lucille Ball debuted "I Love Lucy," and Miss White has never stopped since, ultimately becoming the Female Face of Television.

While Lucy may be known as the Queen of Television Comedy, her longtime TV competitor Betty White has demonstrated obvious staying power through numerous hit TV programs:

Betty White is a successful author of six books. Her latest book, If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won't), is a New York Times Bestseller for which White is currently nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Best Spoken Word Recording for the audio recording of the book.

As if all of the above was not enough for one person, a 2011 poll conducted by Reuters and Ipsos showed that Betty White is considered to be the most popular and most trusted celebrity among Americans.

A registered Democrat and an active member of the Unity Church, the legendary Californian took a quick look back at her long life and summed it up succinctly:

"In the first part of your career, you're trying so hard to get somewhere.  You're hoping against hope to get somewhere.  You hope the next job comes, hope this isn't the last job you'll ever get, so that by the time you get to this end of your life, if the jobs are still coming in, you have to celebrate that."

Betty White also shared how it feels to be a nonagenarian in 2012.

"I'm not only blessed with good health, but good energy," says Betty White on her 90th birthday.  "I don't feel this age.  I'm not trying to be any younger.  I'm not lying about my age.  If I were lying about my age, I would say I was 89."
