Best Music Video of 2012
Dec 31, 2012
The video to the song "Make It Home" from the Los Angeles indie rock band thenewno2 is the best music video of 2012.
thenewno2's "Make It Home" video was directed by Liam Lynch, 42, director of videos for rock groups like Foo Fighters and No Doubt, along with several TV and film projects.
Lead singer Dhani Harrison is the son of Grammy-winning producer Olivia Harrison, a Southern California graduate of Hawthorne High School. Dhani Harrison, 34, is also the only son of iconic megastar George Harrison of The Beatles.
It's obvious that thenewno2 is a collaborative ensemble project, but it's equally apparent that Harrison exercises creative authority over all aspects of sight, sound, feel and nuance in this video. His vibe is all over it, fantastically.
Even amid the darkest visual imagery, which this video certainly features, transcendent moments shine through because they are executed effectively.
During the song and video, the eerie/dreary verse and chorus are consummated, allowing the listener a brief second for a breath. Unexpectedly, the bridge melts into the psyche via tearful chord progressions and a melodic plea as bursts of color warmly invade the visual spectrum.
The instantaneous intensity of the moment equally flatters the lyricist, composer, sound engineer, musicians, music producer, video director, programmer, graphic artist, lead vocalist --- and the gloriously reverberating backing vocal tracks.
As the second verse launches back into the darkness, the focus is sharper, hotter, heavier and quite controlling as the listener is kidnapped and briefly transported from left to right.Psychedelia in targeted dosage. Then, once again, the tear-inducing bridge. Great dynamics.
Regarding the visuals, where do I start? The images in the video are strong, foreboding, dark, cloudy, gloomy and oppressive, yet they are punctuated with hope, warmth, vibrancy and an irresistible gravitational pull.
Dichotomous twinning at its best, and the video is sprinkled with spiritual allusions and cryptic symbolism that encourages repeated viewings.
The lyrics are just as good psychedelic art should be --- open to individual interpretation. Various ideas which come to mind regarding what the lyrics are really about will equally fit. Just when the meaning is figured out, the song suddenly seems to be about something else.
I played the video for colleagues without telling them who made it. The reactions were identical. "Very Beatles/Bee Gees/ELO yet oddly original and unique."
A great compliment to George Martin, Barry Gibb, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, but this song definitely stands apart from all others.
Cool song, cool video. Terrific work by all involved. It is so encouraging to see a legacy of quality live on in today's music industry. "Make It Home" is a single from thenewno2's album, "thefearofmissingout," an album to be collected.
