"The Surfin' Craze" James Darren

Jan 26, 2013

"The Surfin' Craze" is a 1965 surf rock song about California surfing by teen idol and pop singer James Darren from The Flintstones, the megahit Hanna-Barbera animated TV sitcom.

"The Surfin' Craze" is a quasi-Beach Boys surf song that was featured in an episode of The Flintstones in which Fred Flintstone learns to surf with the help of character "Jimmy Darrock" portrayed by James Darren.

Composed by songwriters P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, "The Surfin' Craze" has a cartoon music video (below) that parodies the 1960s beach movies and surf music that popularized Southern California surf culture worldwide.

The classic surf rock song from The Flintstones purposely sounds like the Beach Boys' megahit "Surfin' USA" but with a slight twist.

The chord change during the chorus lyric "crazy" makes it sound way cooler.  As 1960s pop songs go, this one is extremely catchy and fun.

The legendary James Darren is legendary partly because he hitched his star to an immortal TV sitcom and thus immortalized himself as the totally hip "Jimmy Darrock."

Enjoy the following Flintstones surf music video featuring James Darren as "Jimmy Darrock" singing "The Surfin' Craze" --- one of cheesiest but coolest California songs ever recorded.
